EA Still Looking At Medal of Honor Series
That 'other' war shooter series could be making a comeback.
by Jim Reilly
US, August 4, 2009 - Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello dropped a major hint about the company's future plans regarding the Medal of Honor series.
When asked to talk about EA's gaming label needing to have a number of multi-million selling sequels, Riccitiello ran down the list of expected hot-selling titles the company has coming soon, specifically calling out Mass Effect 2. But he also mentioned franchises that have the potential, including Medal of Honor.
"There are a number of other titles out there that have that potential, whether it be Dragon Age or Dead Space or others in our portfolio," said Riccitiello during EA's first-quarter financial call.
"And somewhere out there is Medal of Honor, which we're not yet in a position to describe about specific plans, but will do so in due course."
EA's last major release from the franchise was Medal of Honor: Airborne back in 2007, which received below average scores from critics. The company is going to have to really revamp the series if it looks to take on Activision's strong Call of Duty brand. |

EA Plans To Revitalize Medal of Honor Series
New Need for Speed confirmed for release next year.
by Jim Reilly
November 9, 2009 - What was once old is now new again in the videogames industry.
President of EA Games Label Frank Gibeau recently discussed the successful relaunching of its Need for Speed franchise during the company's investor call this afternoon. Gibeau also added the publisher hopes to continue breathing new life into many of its core blockbuster titles.
"In the months ahead, you'll hear more about our plans to revitalize core intellectual property, including the Medal of Honor franchise," Gibeau stated.
Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello hinted at the franchise's rebirth during the company's investor call this past August, but now it appears it's a question of 'when' not 'if' for the once proud World War II shooter franchise.
The last major release from the series was Medal of Honor: Airborne in September 2007, which was met mostly with above-average review scores. _________________

i think they can make a winner if they really want to and try to find a formula that doesn't replicate the gameplay of COD ... MOH wins hands down in its overall rendition of world war II as far as atmosphere is concerned, it is the only WWII game that i feel takes me back to the places i see in all the books i have ... COD is fun in an arcade-like way
i hope they create a compelling story and focus on the experience rather that the overdone, ADHD-inducing graphics ... make the player think a little more to get through the game rather that spray lead to get from point A to point B. _________________

EA Announces Medal of Honor Modern Re-boot
Players take a trip to Afghanistan this time around.
by Jim Reilly
December 2, 2009 - Electronic Arts has finally revealed details about its plans for a new Medal of Honor title.
As expected, the series is shifting from its traditional World War II roots in favor of a more modern backdrop set in Afghanistan. The story will introduce the Tier 1 Operator, an unknown group working under the National Command Authority.
Development is being handled by two teams, EA's internal Los Angeles studio, who will handle the single-player campagin, and famed Battlefield developer EA DICE will tackle the multiplayer portion.
"When we first set out to reinvent Medal of Honor, we wanted to stay true to its roots of authenticity and respect for the soldier but bring it into today's war. The Tier 1 Operator is the most disciplined, deliberate and prepared warrior on the battlefield. He is a living, breathing, precision instrument of war." said Greg Goodrich, Executive Producer, Medal of Honor. "We are honored to have the rare opportunity to work closely with these men to create a game that shares their experience."
The company originally hinted at the possibility of the franchise making a return earlier this summer before confirming during an investor call that a new title was in development.
"EA has always been an advocate for telling the soldiers' story. The new Medal of Honor follows that tradition. We felt it was important to tell the story of today's war and today's elite soldiers via today's most relevant medium – videogames," said Sean Decker, VP and General Manager of EALA. "We are so proud to bring together two powerhouse development teams to make this game a reality; EA Los Angeles and EA DICE. Medal of Honor promises to be an unforgettable entry in the modern shooter genre."
Medal of Honor is currently set for release in 2010 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. _________________

Joking aside, I'm excited for it...if it manages to reinvent the MOH franchise while still being a good game, I'll definitely be picking it up. _________________

Here's a video showing some of the multiplayer goodness. Looks like it could be fun.
http://pc.ign.com/dor/objects/37294/medal-of-honor-2010/videos/e310_moh_demo_gmp_061410.html
Also the beta comes out next week.
http://pc.ign.com/articles/109/1097302p1.html
At today's EA Press Conference a live demonstration was given for Medal of Honor's multiplayer. While this demo was too short to really form any sort of opinions on, the important news to come out of it was that a Multiplayer Beta test goes live on June 21 for PS3, 360 and PC.
The game was being played on PS3, and had numbers constantly popping up to tell players exactly how they were being rewarded for the kills they were pulling off. Will it simply be another Call of Duty? Find out when you try the Beta later this month, or wait until the game comes out on October 12, 2010.
You can find out more about the beta here.

You have to preorder it to get a beta key though, which kinda sucks. _________________

Actually, you can just sign up for a beta key without purchasing and if you're selected you can get in...which I have.
I gotta say it reminds me a lot of COD4, which is a good thing, I loved the MP in that game.
Combat Mission is a fun mode, its like Unreal Tournament's Assault mode (which can be confusing since they've changed "Deathmatch" to "Assault"), where one team attacks a series of set objectives and the other team defends. The kinda cool addition is that if you're defending your "operation area" is isolated around the objective you're defending, and thus you don't have some sneaky bastard getting by the assault team and spending the map spawn camping instead of defending.
*edit*
So after playing for a while I have figured out some more of the mechanics that differentiate it from COD4.
It has a killstreak feature, but it doesn't work the same as other shooters. Instead of having special abilities for x number of kills, you rack up points based on your kills (a basic kill is 10 points), but you get added points based on the circumstances of the kill. For example you get 5 extra points for a headshot, and 5 extra if it is a revenge or savior kill.
The first level of ability is unlocked at 40 points, but when you get there you can either call in a UAV or a mortar strike, the mortar works similar to BF:BC2. Now I've never lived long enough to reach the next level (100 points in a single life), but I imagine that the abilities are the same but increase in power and effectiveness. I have been hit with Rocket and Missile attacks instead of Mortars before. _________________

Medal of Honor Comes With Battlefield 3 Beta
| Quote: |
Electronic Arts has announced that the Limited Edition of Medal of Honor will come with an invitation to the Battlefield 3 beta. That comes on top of the weapons, ammo and camoflauge that the Limited Edition already offers. The offer is contingent on the beta coming within 12 months of the release of Medal of Honor. As that game launches on October 12 in North America, you can expect the beta to take place sometime in 2011.
This also comes as the first official announcement of Battlefield 3, which was previously only confirmed to be in development during financial talks. Battlefield 3 will apparently come to Xbox 360, PC, and PlayStation 3. Xbox Live Gold membership will be required for access to the Battlefield 3 beta on Xbox 360.
The other Limited Edition pack-ins include the MP-7 and two special shotguns. The PS3 version will include the full game Medal of Honor Frontline, remastered in HD. All Limited Edition versions are listed at a price of $59.99 in the US, suggesting that EA is following a plan similar to what it did for Battlefield: Bad Company 2 where all new copies bought at or near launch included the bonus content. |
Still don't think that I'll be picking up Medal of Honor, especially since EA seems like they eventually let any one end up signing up for their betas. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if they did some thing for buying the Vietnam expansion for Bad Company 2. _________________
